A Circular Exchange investigates historical communications technologies through archival materials from the State Library of Victoria and photographs from the Deutsches Museum in Munich. Using assemblage and still-life photography, Paine builds fragmented narratives that juxtapose semaphore signals with written correspondence, maps with telephones and early electrical apparatus. The work reflects an ongoing inquiry into how communication technologies shape, distort, and poeticize ideas of connection, distance, and the invisible infrastructures that mediate human experience.
Small Talk:127.0.0.1:5000 is a live video transmission that considers submarine fibre optic cables and what would happen if the ocean could listen to us? What would it learn from us via the deluge of online material whirling along the sea floor? The work builds a series of discursive fragments using a Python script that approximates narrative from a random assortment of scraped Wikipedia material, archival images and the artists’ fiction.
